Abstract
Dr. Temple’s remarks concerning my paper are welcomed both as expressing views that will stimulate debate and additional thought concerning the origin of marine terraces on the Tanzanian coast and, as providing an opportunity to amplify certain points in the paper that appear subject to misinterpretation. To simplify matters I will comment upon each of Dr. Temple's points in the same order as he presents them in his discussion. At the onset, however, I should indicate that in the course of the discussion concerning the method of elevation determination and of dating and correlating the Tanga marine terrace with Pleistocene glacial events a major objective of my paper may be overlooked. This was to determine the principal factor contributing to the preservation of eustatic marine terraces from subsequent destruction by wave erosion. Consequently, careful elevation measurement is vital to this theme but the absolute dating and correlation of the Tanga terrace with interglacial chronology, while important, is of secondary value to the primary objective of the article.
