Abstract
This is a major work, and should be studied by a wide international audience. To German-speaking readers the name of Julius Büdel is no doubt “a household word”, in view of his numerous professional papers, but to the “Anglophones” it may be useful to point out the existence of three important introductory syntheses by him that are available in English, his “Geomorphology - Principles” in the Encyclopedia of Geomorphology (1968), and as translations in International Geology Review (1959) and in Derbyshire (1973). Büdel’s concept of the “Doppelten Einebnungsflächen” in the humid tropics has attracted appropriate attention (see e. g., Thomas 1974, and in the same Encyclopedia). Now Büdel has provided us with an extraordinarily useful book. It is concisely written: less than 300 pages of well-illustrated text. The references are abundant, in large measure, naturally, in the German language. From a rough count (880 items) there are 170 English, 52 French, and one each of Czech, Hungarian and Icelandic (J).
