Abstract

All good science is controversial and to that extent the paper by Carol S. Breed and William J. Breed (1979) is to be welcomed. However, when conclusions on the development of a desert area of almost a million square kilometers are based on only five ground observation-sites, all of them situated on the very margins of the dune fields, it is difficult to accept such extrapolation, even if supported by satellite imagery. Further comment is required on the Breed’s views on Ayers Rock. We shall not venture a discussion of the Arizona features they mention for we are familiar neither with the specific forms nor their general setting.
