Abstract

Geomorphology, which must be considered one of the most international of disciplines, held its first truly international conference in Manchester, England, in September, 1985. Appropriately, it was organized and hosted by the British Geomorphological Research Group (BGRG), a group that was celebrating its 25th anniversary at the time and one that has had a long and successful history of conference organization. Although this First International Conference on Geomorphology was by no means the first meeting at which geomorphologists from different countries have had oppotunities to exchange ideas, it was attended by many more delegates (675) from many more countries (51) than any previous geomorphology conference. The actual number of papers presented orally or as posters is unknown because of last minute cancellations. However, the revised final programme listed 323 oral and 214 poster presentations, while the abstract volume listed 713 entries.
