Abstract
In the field of geomorphology there are published each year many papers - monographs, dissertations, articles and contributions. Very often they include fresh views on the genesis and age of landforms and even the relief of a given area. From time to time it is necessary to synthesize these opinions and knowledge, to demonstrate the progress in the different fields of geomorphology, and compare them with earlier ones. Such a task should be performed by handbooks. A handbook should provide a general orientation about the whole fundamental problem of the subject and create interest in that problem. In many countries those books containing the general knowledge about a given subject are called handbooks. For example: in French manuel, in Russian uczebnik, in Czech prirucni kniha. In some countries this term is differentiated: in English handbook and textbook, in German Handbuch und Lehrbuch, in Scandinavian Handbog und Lärebog. A handbook should include the full compendium of knowledge, give a list of authors, and present different opinions and discussions. It is a work written not only for students but for all scientific workers. Instead, a textbook should contain the sum of information necessary for students, without the opinions of particular scientists, without discussions and appreciation. It is a book for students to learn from.
