The historic-genetic approach in applied geomorphology

Abstract
In a continuation of former publications it is shown that historic-genetic geomorphology is important for the solution of practical problems, based on the knowledge of landform development acquired by means of this method. The earlier landform development has a decisive influence on the present land use and the latter’s impact on the landscape budget. Some examples of practical problems, studied by the author, demonstrate the importance of earlier landform development especially for the distribution of the present soils, but also for the exploitation of superficial deposits, for waste disposal, for the water balance and for construction sites. The author decidedly objects to the view that historic-genetic geomorphology is of small - or even of no - importance for the solution of practical problems.
Kurzfassung
In Fortsetzung früherer Versuche wird gezeigt, daß historisch-genetische Geomorphologie auf der Basis der von ihr erarbeiteten Kenntnisse über die Reliefentwicklung auch wichtige Befunde für die Lösung angewandter Fragestellungen liefern kann. Die vorzeitliche Reliefformung hat entscheidenden Einfluß auf die heutige Nutzung und deren Rückwirkung auf den Landschaftshaushalt. An ausgewählten Beispielen selbst bearbeiteter praktischer Fragen kann gezeigt werden, welche große Bedeutung die vorzeitliche Reliefentwicklung insbesondere für die heutige Bodenverbreitung hat, wie sie sich aber auch auf Nutzungsansprüche hinsichtlich oberflächennaher Lagerstätten, Deponien, Wasserhaushalt und Baugrund auswirkt. Der Auffassung, historisch-genetische Geomorphologie habe kaum oder gar keine praktische Bedeutung, wird entschieden widersprochen.
Résumé
A la suite d’essais précédents il est montré qu’une géomorphologie historique et génétique peut aussi fournir des informations importantes pour la solution des termes de problèmes appliqués sur la base des connaissances acquises par elle concernant l’évolution du relief. Le façonnement passé du relief a une influence décisive sur la mise en valeur actuelle et sa répercussion sur l’équilibre du paysage. A partir d’exemples choisis de problèmes pratiques que nous avons traités, nous pouvons démontrer quelle grande importance a l’évolution passée du relief particulièrement pour la répartition actuelle des sols, mais comme elle se répercute aussi sur les exigences d’utilisation concernant des dépôts près de la surface, des décharges, des réserves d’eau et du sol à bâtir. L’opinion qu’une géomorphologie historique et génétique n’ait guère ou pas du tout de portée pratique est résolument refutée.
