Abstract
Conflicting conclusions in identification of former sea levels depend in part on the acceptance of uncertain criteria of establishing today’s level and also on accepting questionable guides for establishing levels of earlier stands. It is the purpose of this paper to describe techniques and to identify lines of evidence that lead to justified estimates. The background upon which the discussion is based is one of extensive fieldwork by the writer and his colleagues made possible by financial assistance from the State of Louisiana, U.S. Army Engineers, and the Geography Branch of the Office of Naval Research.
