Abstract
The 2006 meeting of the German working group of geomorphologists was held in Dresden, the capital of Saxony, Germany, and was themed From Archive to Process. As a basic principle, from (geo)archives information may be obtained, which enables geoscientists to reconstruct processes operating over a long time. That means, various geoarchives (colluvial, alluvial, aeolian, costal, glacial, limnic, marine, karstic, etc.) yield information about the processes which formed the archive. Changes within the archive indicate changes in process dynamics. In addition, approaches focussing on the analysis of current processes cover shorter time spans and durations. Therefore, it is necessary that both approaches (archive and process investigation) work together in order to explain both the formation of the archives and the magnitude and duration of processes. Thus, reliable chronological information of high resolution is needed to gain knowledge about the endpoint of one process and the onset of another. The investigation of process and archive is essential in explaining changes and dynamics of geomorphic systems as a basic step of system understanding. One of the most challenging topics in archive-process-reconstruction is the distinction between dominant and less significant factors influencing geomorphic processes, though the number of factors is rather limited, altogether.
