Abstract
While erosion takes place in areas in the extratropics mainly on the surface, subterranean removal is the most important erosional process in the humid tropics. Water movement in the soil is decisive. Wash comes into play in the savanna and increases in significance with greater aridity. Aging of soil in the rainforest results in further disintegration and removal of clay and iron minerals in particular leading to soil depletion. Palaeosols formed in wetter climates and now in the semi-humid climates are often capped by wash resulting in relicts.
