Methodical considerations regarding weathering

Bremer, Hanna

Abstract

The degree of weathering of a regolith is a geoecological parameter expressed in the density of the vegetation and which influences the fertility of the soil. Soil characteristics determined or influenced by the degree of weathering such as pore volume and the stability of the regolith control geomorphological and hydrologic processes. The present study discusses unusual points of view resulting from the geographic approach. The approach involves spatial comparison at different scales, analytical observation and synthetic, geoecological considerations in the search for explanations. In particular, the strong emphasis on geomorphology resulted in several conclusions. Some of the very divergent concepts are discussed here. A more extensive discussion of newer geomorphological approaches is found in Bremer (1989, 2002).
