Abstract
Arid zone geomorphology has been a widely followed discipline for decades in historical and modern physical geography. The german Zeitschrift für Geomorphologie (Annals of Geomorphology) reflected these research efforts in 13 Special Issues, published between 1970 and 2006. After 13 years, this editorial introduces a 14th Special Issue dedicated to "D esert Research" in German research institutions. An overview of relevant international journals and their (upcoming) contribution to the literature is followed by an outlook at the respective articles assembled in this issue. The studies span research areas from the Middle East across Africa to South America and provide excellent examples for the methodologic variety representing the disciplinary advancements; for example in remote sensing, sedimentology, or geophysics applied for arid zone geomorphological questions. Finally, we conclude with expected progress and challenges for future desert research.
