Abstract

The cross-sectional studies of human growth were reported by many authors. That is reason why the collections of cross-sectional data were easier than those of longitudinal data. Moreover, effective methods for analysing the longitudinal data were not available up to present. The present report was studied by the applications of the factor analysis on longitudinal anthropometrical data and concluded that the shapes of individual growth curves were diagnosed by a single figure. The materials used were the annual records of the Japanese pupils in public schools, aged from 6 to 15 years. The four items i. e., stature, weight, chest girth and sitting hight were available for the analysis. The methods applied were the principal component analysis and the varimax rotation method. The two factors were extracted from each item, i. e., they have represented a decreasing and increasing factor loadings respectively. The individual factor scores were calculated on the two factors. The magnitudes of factor scores of two factors decided the levels and those of the increasing factor controlled on the convexities of individual growth curves. The sexual differences of the factor patterns and the similarities of patterns between stature and sitting hight or weight and chest girth were also presented.
