Abstract
The bilaterally elongated styloid process is described herein. Measurements of its length and diameter (at several points) are compared with corresponding data from literature. We also report the presence of a thickening at the point of initial ossification of the stylohyoid ligament. The present findings evince the asymmetry of the base of the styloid process relative to lateral landmarks on the human skull. Eagle’s syndrome seems to be a multifactorial condition related to development, pathologic or traumatic conditions.
Kurzfassung
Es wird das bilaterale Auftreten einer Verlängerung des Processus styloideus beschrieben, wobei Längen- und Querschnittsmessungen mit entsprechenden Befunden aus der Literatur verglichen werden. In diesem Zusammenhang wird das Auftreten einer Verdickung im Bereich der initialen Ossifikation des Ligamentum stylohyoidium beschrieben. Die Befunde belegen die Asymmetrie der Basis des Styloids in bezug auf die laterale Morphologie des menschlichen Schädels. Das Eagle-Syndrom scheint ein multifaktorielles Phänomen zu sein, das von entwicklungspathologischen oder traumatischen Einflüssen bedingt ist.
