Synopsis

This volume contains ten papers dealing with fine-sediment transport studies within small catchments. Studies carried out from plot scale to small catchment scale (up to 57 km2) examined soil erosion, sediment supply, suspended sediment transport and storage in a range of climatic settings, mainly Mediterranean, and under the influence of various forms of human disturbance.

The papers in this supplement issue cover a wide range of topics such as hydrological response within a sub-urban catchment, soil erosion studies on experimental plots, soil erosion and sediment supply, geomorphic activity in the badlands of Slovene part of the Istric peninsula, reports on the temporal variations of suspended sediment transport in three catchments of the Basque Country and calculation of sediment yields. Another report on coupling of two types of sensors (optical infra-red backscattering turbidimeters, OBS, and ultrasonic beam attenuation sediment sensors, US) explains their usefulness for covering the full range of sediment concentrations. Furthermore sedimentological analyses of slope deposits, evaluation of sediment output from four monitored experimental catchments in the Central Spanish Pyrenees and a sediment budget for the small agricultural catchment Can Revull (on the island of Mallorca) by using 137Cs measurements, sediment source fingerprinting and more traditional monitoring techniques to quantify the individual components of the budget round up the volume.

The selected papers were presented at the 2nd International Seminar on Small Catchments Conference on Geomorphology which was held in Palma de Mallorca (Spain, May 6–8, 2009) organised by the Department of Earth Sciences, University of the Balearic Islands and supported by the International Association of Geomorphologists, the University of the Balearic Islands, the Balearic Islands Autonomous Government and the Spanish Government.

This issue is of great interest for all geomorphologists interested on research catchment studies and the effects of humans on sediment transport and supply which consequently affect our environment.

In this supplement volume a selection of papers covering implications of deformations on the Pannonian Basin, flood risk and hydrology, the relationship between morphology and solution, historical morphological reconstructions using GIS methods, the development and modelling of karstic dolines in ground ice environments, the usage of radio-controlled aerial vehicle imaging techniques as well as the role and effects of vegetation on the Danube´s high banks and on karren solution is presented.

Environment types discussed in this volume are: river banks, rivers, high mountains, mountains and karsts. Research methods such as the use of model aeroplanes in bend developments of rivers, flood forecasts based on geomorphological endowments or the analysis of the effects of flora and ice on karstification represent another scope of this issue.

This volume introduces the results of the researches carried out in the framework of the TÁMOP4.2.1/B “Research methods on biotic and abiotic environments” grant application in a time period of two years.

This supplement issue is of interest for all researchers in the entire field of geomorphology as it covers a wide range of geomorphological environmental research and applied methods in geomorphology.

Geomorphological dynamics is something more than simple landform changes, because it is linked closely to geology, climate, vegetation, and anthropogenic impact. Moreover, it may be viewed in the present-day, geologic-time, and historical perspectives. The territory of Central Europe can serve as an excellent polygon for studying geomorphological dynamics, and the volume edited by Tóth summarizes recent advances of such a research. This collection of 10 individual research papers sheds a light on some important aspects of geomorphological dynamics in geologically and geographically different domains of Central Europe (and especially Hungary).
The contributions to the reviewed volume deal with three principal subjects. The first of them is the regional geological evolution. Benkó et al. review ductile and brittle deformation phases relevant to the Cretaceous-Cenozoic development of the Pannonian Basin on the basis of information from the Sopron Mountains. Kis used granulometric analysis for the purposes of Late Neogene reconstructions for the Pannonhalma Hills. The second subject discussed in this volume is karst development. Veress concludes that solution intensifies on slopes with Pinus mugo patch. Skribanek et al. observed that soil facilitates limestone dissolution, and their contribution emphasizes on the role of bio(geo)chemical factors in karst development. Veress et al. imply that air circulation in karst affects ground ice environment, and they both contribute to the development of covered dolines in the periglacial zone. Kozma & Mitre were able to recognize three sub-types of the Type A channels (Rinnenkarren) im Toten Gebirge. Importantly, much in these papers is told about epikarst features, which have remained understudied until now (Ruban, in press).
Four contributions pay attention to fluvial system dynamics, which is the third principal subject of this volume. Mrekva et al. offer a theoretical framework for the fl ood risk assessment and mitigation. They also propose an idea of urban hydrological cycle, which is specifi c in somewhat (e.g., by less intense infiltration) in comparison with the usual water cycle. The work of Engi et al. is devoted to historical changes of the Mura River since 1788. An application of Gis approaches permitted to establish that the number of river curves decreased, as well as their amplitudes. The length of the bends, in contrast, increased. Kalmár & Kozma show that the radio-controlled aerial vehicle imaging techniques are important for geomorphological studies of fl uvial systems and, particularly, for evaluation of their historical changes. Bódis & Mentes established the relationship between vegetation and small tilt variations on the high bank of the River Danube. This outcome is important for future use of vegetation for landslide hazard mitigation along this river.
The reviewed volume offers a representative slice of the modern knowledge on geomorphological dynamics demonstrating the full complexity of the latter and the broad spectrum of tools for its investigation. Two things to criticize are the absence of any review paper on this subject (the available editorial is evidently not enough) and the illogical order of contributions (e.g., the papers on karst intercalate with those on rivers). The individual papers differ with regard to their structure and style, but they are detailed and bear abstracts, introductory and conclusive remarks, appropriate lists of references, and many figures and tables. The reviewer appreciates the wonderful maps of karren slopes in the Eastern Alps made by Veress (e.g., Fig. 3, p. 50) and the reconstructions of historical changes of the Mura River proposed by Engi et al. (e.g., Fig. 10, p. 75).
The reviewed volume will be highly interesting to specialists in geomorphology, landscape evolution, karst development, fluvial system dynamics, and Late Cenozoic geology of Central Europe. Indeed, this is also a precious source of methodological knowledge, which will be appreciated by both professionals and some students.

In dieser Zeitschrift sind 8 Publikationen zu Problemen in der Geomorphologie und Prozessen in kleinen Einzugsgebieten zusammengestellt. Ein Teil dieser Publikationen wurde im Jahr 2009 auf der Tagung „Ancient Landscapes – Modern Perspectives“ in Melbourne präsentiert. Sowohl von den Untersuchungsmethoden als auch bzgl. der regionalen Fragestellungen wird in der Zeitschrift ein weiter Bereich der Geomorphologie abgedeckt. Regional betrachtet, werden Gebiete in Europa, Südafrika und polare Einzugsgebiete (Arktis und Antarktis) thematisiert. Die geomorphologischen Fragestellungen werden hinsichtlich ihrer Ursachen und Wirkungen in Kontext zu ihrer Variabilität in kleinen Einzugsgebieten gesetzt. Dabei werden hydrologische, geomorphologische und sedimentologische Aspekte der Liefergebiete, der Transfergebiete und der Sedimentationsgebiete beschrieben.

Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird auf die Kopplung meteorologischer Ereignisse (Ursache) mit geomorphologischen Veränderungen (Wirkung) in den Untersuchungsgebieten gelegt. Zudem werden die Auswirkungen dieser Veränderungen in Bezug zu Wasserqualität, Nährstoffverlust und landwirtschaftlicher Produktivität gesetzt. Dadurch wird der praktische Nutzen von geomorphologischen Betrachtungen sehr gut dargestellt. Aufgrund dieser komplexen Prozessbetrachtungen geben Beylich & Zwoliński (2012) einen guten Überblick über aktuelle, geomorphologische Forschungsergebnisse und weisen parallel dazu den praktischen Nutzen dieser Forschungen auf.
