2022 Meteorological Wall and Postcard Calendars

Remote sensing in Meteorology is - actually - a very old topic. Since prehistoric times people have been using their eyes and ears to observe and interpret weather phenomena several kilometres away – whether they be harmless cirrus clouds or threatening thunderstorms.

Meteorological remote sensing in the modern sense is, however, much younger and nowadays strongly guided by technology. Since the end of the 19th century weather balloons were used to observe the atmosphere. For the first time, they opened up areas for observation, that humans could not or could not easily reach.

The invention of radar and satellites then in the 20th century cannot be overestimated in its importance. Both have long been indispensable for weather forecasting and severe weather warnings. Aircraft and drones are other important carriers of remote sensing devices. But technology that was not primarily developed for meteorological purposes also provides data on the current state of the atmosphere (navigation satellites) or for climatological purposes (gravity field measurements).

There is no doubt that remote sensing is useful for scientific knowledge. The fact that remote sensing also has an aesthetic appeal is shown by the aerial and ISS images of this calendar.

The texts on the reverse sides of the pages of the 2022 wall calender intend to acquaint you fundamental aspects of meteorological remote sensing.

This 40th Meteorological Calendar 2022 accompanies you through the year with impressive photographs of meteorological phenomena. This calendar accords with the German Meteorological Society’s goal to broaden public knowledge about atmospheric processes. The photographs featured on the wall- and postcard calendar are identical.

The calendars are available as a wall calendar (DIN A3 landscape format) and a postcard calendar (without texts on the reverse, but with a foldout desk stand instead).
