The first edition of this well accepted and widely used book was printed in 1971. It is evident, that many of the types of equipment described in this first edition became obsolete while the bulk of those in use over the recent years were not mentioned.
Seismic technology has been moving fast. At all times, seismic instrument manufacturers have made use of the most modern components available. The rate of technological improvements in the electronics industry kept on increasing even faster after the mid sixties with the development of data processing and the more recent boom on electronic computers of all kinds. As a result of this situation, the new edition does not deal any more with analogue recording on magnetic tape. Instead two separate parts were assigned to the description of the more complex digital systems.
Also, a new chapter was added dealing with telemetry systems which were not even in a development stage at the time of the first edition and which are still evolving at the present time. This book has been written for people with different scientific backgrounds. Its purpose is to make intelligible to geophysicists words and concepts developed and used by specialists and also to prevent geophysicists from being overwhelmed with esoteric names or abbreviations commonly used by observers and instrument men.
