Synopsis Haut de page ↑
In order to get information about the pathological situation in
forests in South America, especially Chile, one is compelled to look
into many individual publications, most of which have been published
abroad in fo- reign journals. It was therefore desiderable to compile
everything known on this subject in a book in spanish. A description
of the diseases of the genus Pinus and their causes appeared to be
necessary because of the economic importance of Pine trees in South
America.
In the present book are described 46 especies of fungi, most of which
can cause ligth or even severe damage to coniferous trees. Throughout
South America are distributed 28 species of the fungus; the others
occur on endemic hosts in Chile and the bordering countries. Each
fungus is comprehensively described, including the macroscopic and
microscopic characteristics. There is also some information about the
host, the distribution and the pathogenicity. For the ecomomically
important species control methods are recommended. Abundant references
help the reader to continue his/her studies. The text is supplemented
by many pictures and drawings to facilitate the recognition of
diseases and the identification of pathogens.
The present book is intended both for students and for those involved
in practice in identifying the most important and biologically
interesting parasitic fungi of coniferous trees in Chile and other
South American countries.
