The Canary Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Morocco (Africa), and to the north of the Tropics.
This Atlas of Canarian Bryophytes provides the first comprehensive overview of the local distribution of Canarian bryophyte species, and also reports 3 species new to science.
Each of 453 native Canarian bryophyte species is are described and identified by reporting accepted name, a map of its distribution, local commonness, ecology (habitat and associated bryophytes), altitudinal range (altitude to longitude diagram), commentaries and notes on first Canarian reports or taxonomic history.
Technically, the atlas summarizes about 35000 packet labels of herbarium packets containing bryophytes collected on numerous expeditions between 1984–2019.
Collecting followed the geographical scheme of UTM 5×5 km squares. Every citizen, student, researcher, or nature manager interested in island biology, ecology, bryophytes or their species diversity will want to consult this comprehensive atlas.
