Synopsis top ↑
The sixth volume of this series is dedicated to the definition and the characteristic of the Badenian as regional stage of the Middle Miocene of the Central Paratethys (Central Europe). As to the complete development and extent of lithological formations, the number of their local names, as to the rich paleontological contents, the Badenian is the most complete stage of the Central Paratethys. These are the reasons why we are dealing with this important time section of the Miocene only now, in the 6th volume of the series “Chronostratigraphie und Neostratotypen”. The first part of the work gives the stratigraphic position of the Badenian within the framework of the regional stages of the Central Paratethys, its paleontological and radiometrical characteristics and also the definition of the stage. It deals with the possibilities of correlation with the remaining Paratethys and with the Mediterranean Tethys. It describes also the substages of the Badenian and their characteristics. The second part of the work gives a brief characteristic of the type development of the Badenian on the territory of Central Paratethys, i.e. in the Vienna Basin, in all Intracarpathian regions and in the foredeep of the Carpathian Bow. It deals also with the paleogeographic development of the Central Paratethys in different periods of the Badenian and substantiates the origin of evaporites at the end of the Middle Badenian on the one hand and the changes in the direction of marine connections at the boundary between the Middle and the Upper Badenian on the other hand. The third part is dedicated to the description of the holostratotype and of the faciostratotypes of the Badenian stage. The fourth part of the work gives the paleobiological characteristic of the Badenian. In the elaboration of this work has participated an international working team of 52 authors from 9 Central European countries.
