Nannoplankton has become a common tool for dating and reconstructing
stratigraphic frameworks.
This proceedings volume of the 8th Conference of the International
Nannoplankton Association (INA 8), Bremen, September 11 15, 2000
includes nine papers presented during
the conference. The increasing co-operation with scientists outside
the nannoplankton field which was so evident during the conference is
duly reflected in the present issue by papers in which the nannoflora
is used in an integrated, interdisciplinary way together with other
plankton groups and their proxies such as foraminifera and their
stable isotopic composition, palynomorphs and diatoms. The issues
reflects the diversity of present-day nannofossil research despite its
restriction to Cretaceous and younger material, of the four studies on
Cretaceous to Paleocene, three use nannofossils in their 'classical'
way to date sediments and to construct local or regional stratigraphic
frameworks, the fourth study puts more emphasis on palaeoenvironmental
reconstruction. Of the remaining papers on Neogene to present-day
nannoflora, one uses nannofossils to reconstruct the environment. Two
papers concentrate on the biology of the nannofloral taxa and use
changing environmental conditions to reconstruct taxon evolution
and/or ecology. The last two papers concentrate on the information
carried by 'displaced' coccoliths, either in turbudites or in eolian
deposits.
