This compendium documents the current state of mineral nomenclature rules as defined by the recommendations of IMA's Commission on new minerals and names and classification (CNMNC).

Its goal is not to impose an arbitrary set of rigid rules on the mineralogical community, but rather to provide a set of coherent guidelines for naming and publishing new minerals and by providing internally consistent nomenclature schemes for mineral groups with complex solid-solutions series that are sufficiently proactive to allow integration of new minerals as they are discovered and described. The current, corresponding rules are collected in this compendium.

The first version of this handy reference was presented during the 17th General Meeting of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) back in 1998 and became a great success. This new, updated edition will be of great help to authors and editors alike when it comes to mineral naming and classifying new minerals.
