The 1998 annual conference of the "Africa group of German geoscientists"
(AdG) was entitled "State and future of geological scientific projects in
Africa" and held on the 26th/27th of June 1998 in Mainz, Germany.
Papers presented in this volume are representative of the diverse topics
of geoscientific research conducted in Africa and reported on and discussed
at that conference.
The reason for the title for that conference was the variable history of
projects which are subject to the influence of politics, climate, economical
interest and much more. While certain project sectors boom and other sectors
continue to work well for many years, numerous projects are threatened at the
moment or have failed in the past. A further goal of the conference was to
point out the necessity of continuing geoscientific studies in Africa and close
co-operation with professional colleagues of the Africa host countries.
Another intention of the conference was to intensify contacts among the
colleagues working in
Africa, to exchange information and to plan joint projects.
The breadth of the studies discussed at this meeting
represent the thematic spectrum of activities of German geoscientists in
Africa and lends confidence to the conviction that geoscientific
projects in Africa have good prospects for the future.

Die Jahrestagung der Afrikagruppe deutscher Geowissenschaftler (AdG) fand
unter dem Rahmenthema "Situation und Zukunft geowissenschaftlicher Projekte in
Afrika" am 26. und 27. Juni in Mainz statt. Anlaß zu dieser Themenauswahl ist
die wechselhafte Geschichte von Afrika Projekten, die Einflüssen von Politik,
Klima, wirtschaftlichen Interessen und vielem mehr unterworfen sind.
Die in diesem Band veröffentlichten Tagungsbeiträge stehen beispielhaft für
die zahlreichen in Mainz in Vorträgen und Postern präsentierten Themenfelder.
Während bestimmte Arten von Projekten boomen und andere kontinuierlich seit
vielen Jahren gute Arbeit leisten, sind zahlreiche Projekte in der
Vergangenheit gescheitert oder vom Scheitern bedroht.
Ziel dieser Tagung war es zudem, auf die Notwendigkeit der Nachhaltigkeit
geowissenschaftlicher Forschung und enger
Zusammenarbeit mit den
Fachkollegen des Gastlandes hinzuweisen. Darüber hinaus galt es, Kontakte
zwischen den in Afrika engagierten Kolleginnen und Kollegen zu vertiefen,
Informationen auszutauschen und gemeinsame Projekte abzustimmen.
Die Breite der geowissenschaftlichen Arbeiten dieses Heftes
belegt die thematische Vielfalt der Aktivitäten deutscher Geowissenschaftler
in Afrika und läßt
hoffen, daß solche Projekte auch weiterhin zukunftsweisend sein werden.
