Lateral tectonic compression and subsequent uplift of the ophiolites seem to have occurred relatively rapidly. Other studies of the adjacent to the south and east as far as the Turkish-Iranian border show that the ophiolite complex is very extensive, in the area east of Lake Van stretching about 120 km perpendicular to the regional strike. Numerous round structures were observed. Some of them are associated with acid igneous rocks. It is inferred that these circular structures indicate recent intrusions. The local topography is dominated by volcanic cones associated with the circular structures. Sites prospective for primary gold mineralization were identified. Later field investigations confirmed these predictions.
This study shows that the interpretation of satellite images plays an important role in mineral exploration. The geological structure of an area can be analyzed within a short time, providing starting points for subsequent field and laboratory investigations.
