This publication describes occurrences of limestone and dolomites in the African countries. All rock types containing industrially useful quantities of calcium and/or magnesium carbonates, including limestones and dolomites proper, as well as various sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks such as marble, travertine, calcrete, carbonatite, hydrothermal veins of calcite and dolomite, etc. will be discussed under various aspects.

Limestone and dolomite (or dolostone) can be economically important mineral resources if they meet certain qualitative and quantitative specifications. They have a very broad spectrum of industrial applications, ranging from iron and steel making through the construction, chemical, refractory, and glass industries to agricultural and environmental uses.

Eight years ago the staff of the Industrial Minerals and Rocks Section of the BGR realized from repeated enquiries received from outside the BGR that there was considerable demand for information on limestone and dolomite resources in Africa. In a joint initiative, the staff decided to pool their knowledge in a book.

The information compiled in this study between 1985 and 1992 is derived mainly from published data, although some nonconfidential information from the archives of the BGR is also included.

The book

- provides an overview of the limestone and dolomite resources of all African countries, thus adding to the inventory of African mineral resources,

- provides incentives to improve existing industrial applications, and/or develop new applications for domestic resources of limestone and dolomite,

- can serve as an investment and decision-maker's guide within the framework of the economic and social development of African countries.
