In this volume we present the interpretation of a bathymetric and reflection seismic survey, of sedimentological, geochemical and radiometrical studies of deep-sea sedimentation and of investigations of the growth structure, mineralogy, chemistry and micropaleontology of surface manganese nodules and buried nodules. The relationship between nodule formation and sedimentary processes in the equatorial North Pacific Ocean is discussed and compared with nodules from the Central Pacific basins.
Sedimentary hiatuses during the Neogene played a significant role in the initial formation of manganese nodules. The further nodule growth is mainly determined by the sedimentary accumulation rate, the geochemical environment, the supply or decomposition of organic matter and the degree of bioturbation. From site to site these conditions differ and explain the great local variability of nodule types. During the long time span of the nodule growth their general facies also changed according to the movement of the Pacific plate.
Buried nodules provide information about the early stages of growth of surface nodules.
