Abstract
In a series of short-term tests, we investigated the mortality of the zooplankter Daphnia pulex - an important grazer in small pond ecosystems - when exposed to Microcystis aeruginosa. The daphnids were reared individually at different concentrations of cyanobacterial cells. In addition, we investigated how the amount of food (Scenedesmus obtusiusculus) and daphnid life-stage (adult or juvenile) interacted with Microcystis exposure. The role of the peptide toxin microcystin-LR is discussed.
