Abstract
This study deals with the validation of the colourless euglenoid flagellate Khawkinea pertyi (PRINGSHEIM et HOVASSE) PRINGSHEIM ex ANGELER comb. nov. previously assigned to the genus Astasia and then invalidly transferred to Khawkinea. The assignment to Khawkinea is justified because of the presence of an eyespot apparatus. The re-examination of this species, with an accompanied documentation of its ultrastructure, reveals overwhelming similarities in comparison with Khawkinea quartana (MOROFF) JAHN et Mc KIBBEN, especially at the fine structure level. Hence, current hypotheses of the evolutionary origin of Khawkinea species, due to apochlorosis events, are discussed and taxonomic remarks are given.
