Taxonomic evaluation of several Chlorogloea-species (Cyanoprocaryota) from inland biotopes

Komárek, Jiří; Montejano, Gustavo

Abstract

The little known cyanoprokaryotic genus Chlorogloea is distributed all over the world, particularly in specialized biotopes. More than 20 species have been described, but the name of the well defined species, C. microcystoides Geitler, which was described originally from clear Alpine creeks in central Europe, is almost the only one used for the identification of freshwater species (often in spite of different morphology and ecology). This article comprises the descriptions of and comments about six Chlorogloea species (including the best known species, C. microcystoides), found in different inland biotopes, and characterized by various morphological features. The generic characters of Chlorogloea are discussed. Interesting species-specific deviations were found in the life cycles of almost all of the species.
