Abstract

For the studied waters 34 taxa (25 species and 9 varieties) were found. They were discussed briefly and some of them compared with strains isolated from these waters. Taxa hitherto not or only rarely reported from Germany are Scenedesmus armatus var. pluricostatus, S. arthrodesmiformis, S. brasiliensis, S. flavescens var. longicaudatus, S. insignis, S. opoliensis var. delicatissima and S. perforatus. The S. perforatus LEMM. was recorded for Germany for the second time since the type description from Lake Müggelsee, Berlin. The scanning electron microscope turned out to be very helpful for understanding the occurrence of taxa in natural Scenedesmus populations, which are otherwise not or hardly distinguishable under the light microscope. Specimens identified in the light microscope as Scenedesmus abundans showed up under the electron microscope as S. subspicatus with typical abundans spination. A high variability of spination was shown for S. serratus often making it difficult or impossible to distinguish it under the light microscope from S. arthrodesmiformis. Studying isolates of S. maximus and S. oahuensis demonstrated the similarity of the two.
