Abstract

Unionicola (Pentatax) macani, a new species of water-mite from the mantle cavity of the prosobranch gastropod mollusc, Lanistes ovum Peters, in Nigeria is described and figured. The new species is compared with Unionicola curtipalpis Bader, 1978, a species described from specimens found in the mantle cavity of the gastropod Pila cecillei Philippi from the Malagasy Republic. The diagnosis of the subgenus Pentatax Thor, 1922 sensu Cook (1974) is presented in modified form in order to accommodate these two species. Some aspects of host/parasite relationships between unionicolids and molluscs are briefly discussed.
