Abstract

Encrusting algal assemblages have a striking development in some stretches and tributaries of the river Ter, a Mediterranean river situated in Catalonia, NE Spain. Twenty eight sites located in the siliceous headwaters and in some siliceous and calcareous streams and springs have been studied intensively. Cyanophyceae and chlorophyceae are dominant in such assemblages. River substrata, water velocity, degree of shading and chemical composition of the water seem to be the most determining parameters in the assemblage distribution in the river basin. Eutrophie conditions and pollution limit their development.
