Abstract

The principal food of burbot (Lota lota L.) (total length 14.2—63.2 cm) in Lake Biel, Switzerland, was found to consist primarily of fish and insects. The proportion of fish rises with increasing length of burbot. The food composition is subject to seasonal changes. Among fish consumed, perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) and roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) predominate. Fish eggs are eaten in very small quantitites throughout the whole year.
