Abstract

Thaisella is a genus in the subfamily Rapaninae usually associated with estuarine environments. Here, we describe Thaisella ovalis sp. nov., a new species from Maracá Island (state of Amapá) off northern Brazil. Shell morphology and anatomy of the soft parts are described in detail. The new species was previously identified as Thaisella coronata, a species from West Africa. It can be distinguished from T. coronata by its oval-fusiform shape, lack of pronounced nodules, and broad, rounded spire. A discussion on the types of T. coronata is provided, as well as conchological and anatomical comparisons with allied species, particularly the recently described congener from Guatemala, T. guatemalteca. The set of distinctive anatomical features of the new species includes the presence of a pair of tubular accessory salivary glands, a tapered gland of Leiblein presenting a long vessel at the posterior tip, a radula with more numerous rachidian cusps, and the presence of a relatively large, subcircular anal papilla.
