Abstract

Holkeion is a poorly understood genus of the land-snail superfamily Helicarionoidea, to which only 2 species, H. anceps (Gould, 1843) and H. arata (W. T. Blanford, 1869), are formally ascribed. In this study, a comparative morphological and anatomical investigation of several Holkeion specimens led to the discovery of a new species, named here as H. nordsiecki sp. nov., and to an extended description of this genus based on newly described genitalia. Our results confirm the presence of a straight epiphallic caecum attached by a penial retractor muscle in the genitalia of this genus. Data from the recorded localities suggest that each of the 3 species occurs in a different area. Holkeion nordsiecki sp. nov. is restricted to Thailand, while H. arata is known only from the type locality in Myanmar. Only Holkeion anceps has a wide distribution, being found in several localities along the Tenasserim Range in Thailand and Myanmar. An updated distribution map for all 3 species of the genus is provided.
