Abstract
Rearing experiments were carried out with twelve different mono-, oligo- and polyphagous aphid species on a completely synthetic cholesterol-free diet. This artificial medium, in all experiments, contained only 0,1 mg Riboflavin per 100 ml. Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas 1878) was reared for 17 generations. This is the first report of it being continuously maintained on an artificial medium. Aphis fabae Scopoli 1763, Myzus persicae (Sulzer 1776) and Aulacorthum circumflexum (Buckton 1876) were maintained on the same diet for 21, 18 and 8 generations respectively. The mortality, developmental period and larviproduction was, within the normal limits of variation, constant for the four markedly polyphagous species continuously maintained. For the other eight species, the longest period of maintainance was three generations, and they showed a successive decrease in performance, not only from generation to generation but also within a generation from early to late born specimens. The question of why it is possible to rear some (markedly polyphagous) aphid species continuously, whereas being impossible with others, is discussed.
