Abstract
An attempt is made to compare the taxocoenoses (associations) of (hilltopping) Sarcophaginae visiting decaying organic substrates, mainly small marine carcasses on the Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea near Makarska and on the Bulgarian coast of the Black Sea. The diversity and equitability values compared show considerable differences indicating distinct ecological disintegration of the above taxocoenoses in the Dalmatian coastal zone. This degradation is mainly reflected in dominance of a few notorious synanthropic taxa visiting faeces, and decreasing species diversity values of taxocoenoses studied (e g: Bercaea cruentata, Helicophagella melanura). 3 groups of taxa could be discerned from the species complex studied: (1) a montane of pseudomontane group, (2) calciphilous thermophilic taxa, mostly parasitoids of snails, (3) thermophilous, partly subtropical and tropical taxa obviously accompanying decaying meat especially of small marine carcasses. Destruction of coastal vegetation, overdimensioned human settlement including high population density and mass tourism, insufficient measures of communal hygiene, large scale aerial application of insecticides and decimation of sea animals by sport divers are obvious factors responsible for this negative development of landscape ecology of the Dalmatian maritime territories studied. The present situation of Sarcophaginae associations at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast seems to be still less critical, but the underdeveloped structures of communal hygiene, the trends of recreation impact and their solution are similar to the conditions in Dalmatia; and it seems to be just a matter of time when a similar situation develops also in the Black Sea coast. At present, the only survival eventuallity for natural associations of Sarcophaginae, reducing animal carcasses in coastal maritime zones, exists in remote habitats which should be legally protected in future.
