Abstract
The new familia Neotheoridae is erected for Neotheora chiloides n. gen., n. sp., described from a single female specimen from Matto Grosso, Brazil. The monophyly of the subordo Exoporia is demonstrated on the basis of five synamorphies of its constituent superfamiliae. The monophyly of the superfamilia Hepialoidea is demonstrated on the basis of two or three synapomorphies of its constituent familiae. The status of the previously known hepialoid familiae is discussed and the Anomosetidae removed from synonymy with Prototheoridae. The primary dichotomy in the superfamilia probably lies between the Palaeosetidae and the remaining familiae together. The Neotheoridae is assigned to the Hepialoidea. Its sister-group is probably either the Prototheoridae or the Anomosetidae.
