Abstract

A technique for rearing successive generations of the Small Tortoiseshell, Aglais urticae Linnaeus 1758, is described. The influence of rearing temperatures between 15°C and 35°C is investigated quantitatively: The duration of entire development increases from 27.5-53.5d with decreasing temperatures, following closely a power function. Pupal body length (2.3 cm) and adult body weight (1.5 m N) reach maximum values at 20°C; fecundity is highest at 30°C (200-300 eggs/♀), mortality at 25°C (15-20% of larvae).
