Abstract
The present paper deals with the toxicity of Pentachlorophenol (PCP), Sodium-Pentachlorophenate (NaPCP) and Phenol to a freshwater pulmonate snail Lymnaea luteola (Lamarck), so as to determine the lethal concentrations, slope functions, median survival periods, and their relative potency. The median lethal concentrations (LC50s) and their 95% fiducial limits were for pentachlorophenol 0.507 (0.482—0.533) and 0.112 (0.103—0.122) mg/l, for sodium pentachlorophenate, 1.161 (1.135—1.189) and 0.575 (0.547-0.605) mg/l and for phenol 206.50 (200.00-213.30) and 102.60 (96.61-108.90) mg/l at 12 hr and 96 hr of treatment respectively. The median survival periods exhibited increasing trend with decreasing concentrations of the three chemicals. Based on the relative potency ratio, phenol was the least toxic and PCP the most toxic among the three chemicals whereas NaPCP occupied an intermediate position.
