Abstract
From April 1987 to October 1988 abundance, biomass and secondary production of planktonic, epiphytic and benthic microcrustaceans were investigated in the littoral zone of eutrophic Lake Biel. Biomass and production estimates were based on abundance of 34 species and on length-weight-relationships established on the populations under study. Standing crop of planktonic communities reached their maximum in early summer and were about twice as high among macrophytes than in adjacent open littoral water, whereas standing crop of benthic communities peaked during senescence of aquatic plants in August and September. Total crustacean production was 12.6 g DW/m2 in the first and 8.4 g DW/m2 in the second year with relative contributions of benthic species of 39 % and 54 %. Microcrustaceans thus consumed 26 % and 18 % of total net primary production in the littoral zone. Seven species contributed each to more than 5 % total production in both years: Acanthocyclops robustus, Daphnia hyalina/galeata, Bosmina longispina, Bosmina longirostris, Alona affinis and Chydorus gibbus.
