Abstract

The epiphytic algal community on water hyacinth in the coastal waters of southwestern Nigeria were investigated for 2 years. Diatoms formed the dominant group and made up 40 out of the 56 algal species identified. Planktonic forms were often associated with the epiphytic community and the type of flora depended on the ecological zone, time of year and whether the samples were harvested from the middle or margin of the water. Although the effect of physical and chemical factors was significant in some areas, biological factors appeared paramount in others.
