Abstract
In a shallow groundwater ecosystem (Lobau, Vienna), located next to an old arm (Eberschüttwasser) of the Danube, temperature, dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic carbon and bacterial activities were measured. These parameters fluctuated seasonally due to the influence of the surface water, depending on the distance from the shoreline. Near the surface water, the groundwater is more densely colonized by meiofauna. Apart from this pattern, the fauna exhibits a patchy distribution, reflecting the high heterogeneity of the aquifer. The influence of the surface water on biological and physicochemical variables, and the interactions between them, are discussed.
