Abstract

As a contribution to the discussions on the nomenclature of granulite an attempt is made to fit the definition of granulite in with the definitions of other felsic and mafic rock types occurring in high-grade metamorphic terrains. In such terrains granulites, granofelses and pyriclasites are commonly found intermingled and transitional with gneisses, schists and amphibolites. Charnockitic rocks, which may be magmatic as well as metamorphic in origin, are included in the classification system. The emphasis in the proposed classification is on modal composition, rather than on texture of the rock.
