Abstract

The lithology of the Cretaceous/Tertiary junction beds is briefly characterized. The Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary is clearly marked by a change in lithology at the turn from the Maastrichtian to the Danian, whereas there has been no change in facies at the turn from the Danian to the Montian. The biostratigraphy boundary between the Maastrichtian and the Danian is defined better by macro than by microfauna. Typical Cretaceous foraminiferal assemblages disappear below the Lower Eocene. Therefore, the interval from the Middle Maastrichtian to the top of the Paleocene may be interpreted as the time of extinction of the Cretaceous species and the gradual increasing significance of the Tertiary ones.
