Abstract

The new species Lejeunea elegans from Brazil is described and illustrated. This species is characterized by plane, asymmetrically ovate leaf lobes with entire to crenulate margins and a narrowly rounded to short-apiculate apex, and acute, gynoecial bract lobes asymmetrically ovate gynoecial bract lobes. The specimen was found in a humid forest at 575 m in Bahia (Northeastern Brazil), growing on living leaves. The new species is morphologically most similar to the Afro-Asian L. pulchriflora but the cuticle is smooth in the new species and papillose in L. pulchriflora.
