Abstract
In a previous paper, Hendey (1951), the author described the part played by diatoms in the formation of slime on surfaces submerged in Chichester Harbour and the possible effect of the slime on antifouling paint as applied to the hulls of ships. As information concerning the incidence of fouling organisms in waters other than those around British shores was required, the opportunity was taken of examining a series of non-toxic test panels immersed by the Kuwait Oil Co. at Mena al Ahmadi. Mena al Ahmadi is an oil township within the Company’s concession about 20 miles south of the old town of Kuwait on the Persian Gulf. The shore line is a gently shelving sandy beach, relatively free from mud, having a tide range of about 4. 6 metres. Non-toxic panels were immersed from a jetty throughout the year 2 metres below the level of low water spring tides and were removed at different intervals, sun dried, packed after a mild formalin treatment and despatched by air freight to London. This paper deals only with the diatoms recovered from the panels immersed during 1951. 205 species were recorded, 3 are new to science.
