Abstract
Between the United Nations Conference on Desertification (UNCOD) 1977 in Nairobi and the United Nations Conference on Environmental Development (UNCED) 1992 in Rio, desertification has worldwide become a major key word for many projects of technical cooperation in dry areas. Unfortunately, desertification control has yet not been very successful. This is, in parts, due to misleading definitions of important terms that are closely related to desertification, such as: variability of rainfall and production, degradation, regeneration, carrying capacity, stability, etc. Furthermore, there is insufficient indication and knowledge regarding the irreversibility of desertification processes and their damages. Recommendations for further scientific contribution to combat degradation in dry areas are given in this paper from the view of applied vegetation science.
