Abstract
Populations of Carex curvula ssp. curvula and Carex curvula ssp. rosae were investigated in the western part of the Dolomites (Latemar, South Tyrol, Italy) during the vegetation periods 1990-1992. The relation between habitat and population size, the reproductive fitness and the growth dynamics of Carex curvula ssp. rosae were analyzed and compared with those of Carex curvula ssp.curvula. The two species exhibit essential differences in their shoot dynamcis and in their flower production. Carex curvula ssp. curvula showed a high compensatory growth after grazing. Such effects could not be determined for Carex curvula ssp. rosae. In closed grassland all dead shoots of Carex curvula ssp. rosae could be attributed to dead flowering shoots. In the case of Carex curvula ssp. curvula only 1/4 of all dead shoots were dead flowering shoots. The populations of Carex curvula ssp. rosae were more or less stable throughout the research period, while the population of Carex curvula ssp. curvula increased remarkably in size.
