Abstract
The syntaxonomy and synecology of some mixed hardwood forest communities of the Santa Barbara region (southern California) is discussed, using the Braun-Blanquet approach. Changes in floristics, leaf sizes, evergreen vs. deciduous traits, species richness, cover of understory layers, and life-forms appear to be primarily related to the altitude complex-gradient and the gradient from perennial streams to xeric slopes.
