Abstract
In river sediment there is information about the hygienic status of waters. Bacteriological sediment data may be used to provide a more detailed hygienic status of water quality. In this work the importance of the particle size of sediment for characterizing sediment samples for bacteriological investigations was analysed. The sediment samples were taken by a multicorer. The membrane filtration technique was used for determination of the number of bacteria. A study of the particle size of the sediment samples was made using a combination of wet sieving and automatic sedimentation analysis.
